About the project

The latest wave of feminism conveyed by the international MeToo movement has gained an extraordinarily important place in the contemporary world, in the public debate as well as it greatly influenced artistic circles. This is particularly the case in countries where these environments are interconnected with the dynamics of society as a whole. But what about peripheral spaces, countries which only receive an echo of the pioneering events in the Western world? In Eastern Europe, the young generations living at the borders of the European Union are facing current challenges that bring them closer to the rest of the continent. Does the feminist question manage to find a favorable echo among these populations? What can arts dealing with women in this region look like, especially in its most multi-ethnic part, the Balkans?

In the academic education received by French pupils and students, a tremendous lack of information on the countries of Eastern Europe, and in particular the Balkan region, is to be deplored. While these territories are the proponents of a rich multicultural history, it is clear that they remain the forgotten ones in the European collective imagination. The name "Balkans" which literally means "wooded mountain" derives from Turkish, at a time when several countries of the present-day Balkans were then under the Ottoman or Habsburg Empire. In this region, feminist movements have appeared relatively recently in a society which remains traditionalist. This project thus aim to question, through the photographic media, the representations of women as they are suggested by artists from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia. Showing the French and Western public these representations of women in the countries of the Balkan space therefore sets different goals: empowering young creation and women as well as introducing the Balkans through an artistic approach. The targeted audience is students, photographic art enthusiasts and any person sympathetic to our project of diversification and decentralization of the European art.

The target audience concerns students, amateurs of photographic art and anyone sensitive to our project of diversification and decentralization of European art. Insofar as Les Balkannes aims to promote young artists from the Balkans and, more generally, long-term intercultural exchanges, our exhibition is aimed in particular at the student public, the general public, various transmission agents. such as gallery owners as well as heads of cultural institutes and journalists.

A collaboration with a group of political science students in Dijon called "Bourgogne Balkans Express", specializing in Eastern Europe, is already under development. A first seminar organized by Zoom on November 8, 2020 thanks to the BBE interlocutor Sofija Bozic. A working group was formed for the occasion to present a history of women in the Balkans, from the Ottoman Empire, through the emergence of feminist movements, to the appearance of feminist art in the Balkans. Ultimately, this collaboration will make it possible to create colloquiums or seminars around these themes, presented by Political Science students, as part of the exhibition in Paris.

In-depth contact was established with the Lecturer at Aix-Marseille University Hayri Göksin Özkoray in order to organize a seminar on Balkan women in the Ottoman Empire for the general public.

Our mission therefore aims to define an educational and didactic framework for cultural exchanges between West and East as well as to offer visibility to contemporary Balkan artists in Paris.

It has been agreed that the exhibition will run from September 16 to October 9, 2021.

The members of the organization are part of the “Contempl'Art” association, created in October 2020. It is an initiative of 2 students from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and 4 students from the Faculty of Letters from the Sorbonne. The team is made up of Emilia Trifunovic (Founder of the association), Isidora Lazic (President of the association), Anastasia Grigorieva (Referent in Art), Axelle Jean (Community Manager), Alissa Uzbekova (Responsible for members. ) and Pauline Rambert (Logistics). The students take charge of the entire organization of the exhibition as well as the development of the association. They are supported by professors from the various universities of the Sorbonne Marketa Theinhardt, Sacha Markovic, Delphine Bechtel, Jean-François Laplénie and Yann Toma.

The selection of works was carried out in the form of a competition among students in art and photography schools in several cities in each country. A local canvassing was carried out in Belgrade, another through social networks and by sending emails. Participants had the opportunity to apply from December 3, 2020 until February 15, 2021. A photograph representing women in their country, accompanied by an explanatory text of the artistic project was transmitted in digital format. The competition reached 947 people and we received 51 full entries with at least two entries per country, 39 female artists and a large majority of young people.

One artist per country (eleven works in total) was selected by the Association's Artistic Committee, made up of professors Nathalie Clayer, Ioana Cîrstocea, Éléonore Challine and photographer Cebos Nalcakan. Among the selected, three winners were subsequently appointed by a second jury, made up of the artist ORLAN, and professors Fabrice Giomi and Hélène Marquié. The artist who received the first prize will be offered the trip to Paris as well as accommodation for the opening of the exhibition. The second prize is a plane ticket, and the third prize is a financial award. A twelfth work was also selected as the association's Coup de Coeur. The 12 exhibitors. will therefore be Iza Strumbelj (Slovenia, First Prize), Nasa Tatic (Bosnia, Second Prize), Elena Sadica (Romania, Third Prize), Ljubo Asceric (Serbia, Coup de Coeur of the association), Erdiola Mustafaj (Albania), Mihail Sotirov (Bulgaria), Eva Popovic (Croatia), Alexandra Voutsina (Greece), Besfort Syla (Kosovo), Filip Petkovski (North Macedonia), Zorana Mandic (Montenegro) and Marina Stancevic (Serbia).

The Contempl'Art association is actively working on its influence with the very imminent opening of the initiative to any interested volunteer.
